  • NRC of 1: The material is perfectly absorptive. 

  • NRC greater than 1: This is a testing limitation, and not a characteristic of the material itself. 

NRC ratings are calculated by averaging the sound absorption coefficients of a material at four different frequencies. These frequencies are 250, 500, 100, and 2000 Hz. The average is then rounded to the nearest 0.05


Alpha coefficient defined as the ratio of the sound energy absorbed by a surface to the sound energy incident on that surface, taking values between 0 and 1. Here, 1 meaning fully absorbing at a particular frequency and 1 meaning fully reflecting.
